This curve mug (curved ceramic mug) is handcrafted by Mashiko potter Yoshinori Hagiwara, using clay personally refined from raw earth collected on the embankments of his own garden. The clay is carefully levigated by hand, preserving its natural character and depth.
The glaze is made from iron-rich soil sourced from the same land, creating warm, earthy tones that emerge through firing in a traditional noborigama (wood-fired climbing kiln). Subtle variations in colour and surface reflect the interaction between flame, ash, and iron, making each mug quietly unique.
Although forms vary, all pieces in this series are fired using the same materials and techniques, offering a cohesive expression of Hagiwara’s approach to Mashiko pottery—rooted in place, process, and tradition.
