In 538 AD, along with Buddhism, the bronze bell, known as "orin," was transmitted from the Chinese mainland to the Korean Peninsula and eventually to Japan.
Initially used simply as a musical instrument, around 1100 AD, as Buddhism spread among the common people, monks and craftsmen exchanged ideas and experimented to create a more pleasing tone for the orin, resulting in various changes in its shape and thickness, leading to Japan's unique evolution of the instrument.
Today, the orin is indispensable in Buddhist ceremonies, serving to calm the mind and focus prayers.
Over the years, they hope that the beautiful sound of the orin, will reach and spread to those who need it as a means of enhancing peace of mind and concentration.
＜tips for long-term use＞
Due to the characteristics of brass, Orin's color deepens over time as it ages, so we hope you enjoy watching that change. The oils and oils on your hands may leave marks. If you are concerned, please wear cloth gloves. In addition, if you store it in a place with as little humidity as possible, and clean it by applying beeswax or cooking oil to the entire surface and wiping it with a soft cloth, it will be less likely to get fingerprints and will be cleaner.
If patina appears and there is no change in the sound, you can use it as is. If you are concerned about it, try polishing it with a mixture of vinegar and salt, metal polish, or sandpaper. If you drop it and it becomes dented or the sound changes, please contact them so that they can reshape it and re-articulate it without trying to fix it yourself.
About Syouryu
‘Syouryu’ is the proprietary brand of Shimatani Syouryu Koubou, a workshop that has been a specialist manufacturer of orin bowl gongs for Buddhist temples since its establishment in 1909.
There are three orin artisans at this workshop (there are only ten in all of Japan), who create orin gongs by hammering down metal to create a round shaped gong with a nicely tuned sound. Our aim is to continue to make new products using this metal hammering technique.
