This handcrafted Comb Patterned Katakuchi Matcha Bowl was created exclusively for (ki:ts) by renowned Mashiko potter Tomoo Hamada, the third-generation successor of the Hamada family lineage. The bowl features Hamada’s signature glaze layering, combining soft celadon tones with deep charcoal hues that flow naturally down the form. The comb-textured (kushime) pattern adds movement and depth, while the katakuchi spout offers both beauty and practical functionality. Wheel-thrown and finished in the traditional Mashiko style, this piece reflects the Mingei spirit passed down from his grandfather, Living National Treasure Shoji Hamada. Tomoo Hamada is a renowned Mashiko pottery artist and the third-generation successor of the Hamada family, one of Japan’s most celebrated ceramic lineages. As the grandson of Living National Treasure Shoji Hamada, Tomoo continues the legacy of the Mingei folk craft movement while bringing his own contemporary sensibility to traditional Mashiko pottery. His works are known for their bold forms, natural glazes, and expressive brushwork, often featuring ash, persimmon, and tenmoku-style finishes that highlight the beauty of Mashiko clay.
