Hand Drawing in Japan

The patterns on the vessels reflect the aesthetic sense of the Japanese people, who are sensitive to the changing seasons.

The plum pattern is one of the representative patterns of Kutani-yaki (ware). Because plum blossoms bloom before other flowers, they are considered the ideal of life without giving in to adversity. It has been loved by Japanese people since ancient times as a flower that brings good luck.

Kutani Bitouen Eisyou (瑛生)

The name "Eisyou" was given by Mr. Tadashi Shinoshima, a graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts, to express that Kutani Bitouen's vessels would "make the best use of the beautiful kutani-stones".

Mr. Tadashi Shinojima was a culinary researcher from the Showa era to the Heisei era, and his family was a traditional Japanese restaurant that was cooked for the emperor at the Kyoto Imperial Palace for generations.

To produce Kutani-yaki (Kutani ware) that is suitable for modern life and loved by people in Japan and abroad. This is the theme of Kutani Bitouen, which has a history of 100 years. It is their belief that Kutani patterns, with their depth and grandeur reminiscent of the Sea of Japan in winter, have both modernity and internationality.

Kutani-yaki From Ishikawa, Japan

Among the many diverse types of Japanese pottery, Kutani-yaki (Kutani-ware) is one of the most renowned for its bold colors and vibrant aesthetic spirit.

Despite the complex history of these wares, it is now closely associated with Ishikawa prefecture, which was formerly Kaga province.

Discover the history of this craft and its home in Kaga, the contemporary Kutani-yaki producer Kutani Bitouen, as well as the culture and landscape of Ishikawa Prefecture where this art came to life.
