Yoshinori Hagiwara – Contemporary Mashiko Pottery
This Matcha Bowl (L) is a handcrafted work by Mashiko-based ceramic artist Yoshinori Hagiwara, rooted deeply in the land where it was made. The bowl is formed from clay that Hagiwara personally collected from the embankments of his own garden and refined through traditional water-levigation techniques, ensuring a rich, natural texture.
An iron-rich glaze, also derived from locally sourced soil gathered near his home, is applied to the surface, giving the piece its distinctive depth and earthy tone. The bowl is then fired in a traditional noborigama (climbing kiln), where flame, ash, and heat interact organically to create subtle variations and a quiet sense of movement.
Although each bowl differs slightly in shape, all pieces in this release were fired together using the same materials and process, forming a cohesive body of work. This generously sized Matcha Bowl is well suited for tea ceremonies, contemplative use, or as a sculptural object that reflects the spirit of Mashiko pottery and Japanese craftsmanship.
