STORY
This print celebrates a love of nature. Combining a flowing paisley pattern with a regular hexagonal shape as its base, resembling the pattern found on the shell of a tortoise, creates the dignified turtle shell motif.
About 亀甲 KIKKO:
The tortoiseshell pattern is regarded as a symbol of longevity and is considered a noble motif. It holds a prestigious position in traditional Japanese culture and is often associated with prosperity and a long, fruitful life.
Kikko is one of the auspicious patterns that originated from the tortoiseshell shape, symbolising longevity and good fortune.
Until the Heian period, the use of this motif was reserved exclusively for the nobility, reflecting their privileged status. However, as the aristocratic era came to an end and the powerful samurai rose to prominence during the Kamakura period, the tortoiseshell pattern became a popular design element in the family crests of influential samurai clans.
