This exclusive collaboration between Kouungama, a celebrated Karatsu ware studio in Saga, and (ki:ts) blends traditional craftsmanship with a refined, contemporary aesthetic. Created without the potter’s wheel, each piece is hand-built using the coil and pinch technique, where clay is rolled into coils and shaped gently by hand.
The surface is adorned with a Blue Bird motif expressed through the delicate Washi-dye technique, where dyed Japanese paper patterns are transferred onto the clay, resulting in soft, layered hues and subtle texture.
Each matcha bowl bears the organic warmth of hand-formed clay, with natural unevenness that captures the essence of true craftsmanship. On the base, the (ki:ts) name is handwritten with a bamboo skewer, marking its authenticity and collaborative spirit.
A harmonious blend of Japanese tradition and modern design, this hand-built matcha bowl invites you to experience the beauty of imperfection and the serenity of handcrafted art.

About Kouungama
Kouungama opened in 1992.
The kiln produces mainly bowls, plates, teacups, and other tableware using the Karatsu method. They strive to create “Takeo ceramic ware to accompany daily life” by combining simple earthenware “Karatsu” with gorgeous features such as overglaze enamels.
Originally, most of the pottery made in the Takeo area had roots in Karatsu-yaki (ware), and there was no such thing as “Takeo ware “. However, they have inherited the techniques of Karatsu ware and added their own original overglaze enamels to it.
They call it “Takeo Ancient Karatsu Ware “.
Karatsu-yaki From Saga, Japan
Karatsu-yaki(ware) is a type of Japanese pottery known for its rustic, earthy aesthetic. Handmade by skilled artisans in the city of Karatsu, each piece is unique and carries a rich history.
