Tomoo Hamada – Mingei Tradition & Contemporary Mashiko Ceramics
This spiral-ridged tea cup (yunomi) was handcrafted exclusively for (ki:ts) by Mashiko potter Tomoo Hamada, the third-generation successor of the Hamadagama kiln. The cup features a dynamic rasen-shinogi (spiral rib) pattern carved into the clay, creating a tactile surface that catches the light beautifully and offers a comfortable grip.
Finished with a deep indigo and iron glaze that transitions subtly toward the rim, the piece showcases Hamada’s signature glazing style and the natural character of Mashiko clay. Each yunomi is wheel-thrown, hand-carved, and fired using traditional Mashiko techniques rooted in the Mingei folk-craft tradition.
Elegant yet functional, this cup is ideal for tea, sake, or everyday use, and makes a refined addition for collectors of Japanese studio pottery.

Tomoo Hamada – Third-Generation Potter of the Hamada Family
Tomoo Hamada is a renowned Mashiko pottery artist and the third-generation successor of the Hamada family, one of Japan’s most celebrated ceramic lineages. As the grandson of Living National Treasure Shoji Hamada, Tomoo continues the legacy of the Mingei folk craft movement while bringing his own contemporary sensibility to traditional Mashiko pottery. His works are known for their bold forms, natural glazes, and expressive brushwork, often featuring ash, persimmon, and tenmoku-style finishes that highlight the beauty of Mashiko clay. Every piece is wheel-thrown and wood-fired in the historic Noborigama kiln, reflecting a balance of tradition, craftsmanship, and modern artistry. Tomoo Hamada’s ceramics are highly valued by collectors seeking authentic Japanese pottery rooted in heritage and timeless design.
Mashiko-yaki (ware) is a style of Japanese pottery originating from Mashiko, a town in Tochigi Prefecture known for its rich clay and centuries of ceramic tradition. Characterized by thick, durable clay, simple yet elegant forms, and natural glazes, Mashiko-yaki is both functional and artistic, perfect for everyday tableware or collectible pieces.
Unlike ultra-delicate ceramics, Mashiko-yaki emphasizes sturdiness, warmth, and a tactile feel, reflecting the hands-on approach of the artisans. Many pieces are handmade in family-run studios, preserving traditional techniques while experimenting with contemporary designs.
