Enokidagama – Handcrafted Mashiko Pottery
Enokidagama, based in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, is a distinguished pottery studio run by the Enokida family — currently the 5th generation couple, Tomo Enokida and Wakaba Enokida, at the helm.
Situated near the well‑known ceramic region of Mashiko, the studio blends everyday utility with expressive craftsmanship.
Working from a converted saikuba (former factory) which was transformed into their main showroom and studio, the Enokida family invites visitors into a space where pottery is both exhibited and made.
The studio atmosphere reflects their philosophy: thick‑bodied Mashiko clay makes for sturdy, trustworthy tableware, while glazes and forms evolve to meet contemporary needs — all without losing the rooted feel of Mashiko yaki (ware).
Each member of the family contributes distinct styles: the 4th generation, Katsuhiko Enokida, produces traditional soba bowls and tea‑ware; the next generation, Tomo and Wakaba, explore patterns such as polka‑dots and playful touches in glaze techniques like “rōbiki” (wax‑resist).
Their work is unified by a dedication to Mashiko’s clay and glaze heritage: rather than making ultra‑thin ware, they favour the thicker, solid feel that matches the character of the region’s materials.
